Toner vs essence: what they do, and whether you need either

September 23, 2026

Hi Beauties

Melbourne-born and London-based, I’m a beauty and fashion educator with over a decade in the industry. I created Beauty Edition to share what I’ve learned—and what I’m still figuring out. Expect skincare that makes sense, timeless style, and a slower, more intentional way of living well.

Toner and essence are two of the most confusing steps in skincare, partly because they look so similar. Both are watery, both go on after cleansing, and both are often described in ways that don’t quite explain what they’re for.

The honest answer is that neither is essential. But for some skin, one or both can genuinely earn their place.

Toner

Toners were originally designed for a very specific job. Older cleansers, particularly soap-based ones, could leave skin feeling tight and slightly off-balance, and often left a residue behind. Toner removed the last traces and helped rebalance the skin. Many early toners were also high in alcohol, which gave them that sharp, squeaky-clean feeling.

Most modern cleansers are far gentler and rinse cleanly, so that original job has largely disappeared. Today’s toners fall into three broad types:

Hydrating toners add a light layer of moisture, and help the products that follow spread more easily.
Exfoliating toners contain acids, and work as your exfoliant step.
Soothing toners are designed to calm and comfort reactive skin.

If you use an exfoliating toner, treat it as an exfoliant rather than an everyday toner. That means a few times a week, not every morning and night.

Essence

Essence comes from Korean and Japanese skincare, where it has long been a key step. It sits somewhere between a toner and a serum: usually slightly more concentrated than a hydrating toner, but lighter than a serum.

Its main job is hydration. An essence adds a layer of water-based moisture that helps the skin feel plumper and more supple, and helps the products that follow absorb well. It’s usually pressed into the skin with your hands rather than swept on with a cotton pad.

So what’s the difference?

In practice, the line between them is blurry. Like serum, ampoule and booster, neither word has a fixed definition, so one brand’s hydrating toner can be very similar to another brand’s essence.

As a general guide, a toner is lighter and prepares the skin, while an essence is slightly richer and focused on hydration. If you use both, toner goes on first, then essence, then your serum.

Do you need either?

Probably not, if your skin feels comfortable with your cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen.

They’re most worth trying if your skin is dehydrated, if it feels tight after cleansing, or if you like the feeling of layering light hydration. An exfoliating toner is also a simple way to add exfoliation to your routine.

What’s worth avoiding is a toner high in drying alcohol. That squeaky-clean feeling usually means your skin has been stripped, not refreshed.

The short version:
Toners prepare, essences hydrate. Both are optional.

Ask yourself:
Does my skin feel tight or dehydrated after cleansing? If not, you may not need either.

Worth knowing:
An exfoliating toner is an exfoliant, so use it a few times a week, not twice a day.
