Levi’s Ribcage Straight Ankle: the perfect petite denim

September 25, 2026

Taking up space:
My petite story

Makeup was the first thing that ever fit

About me

Melbourne-born and London-based, I'm a beauty and fashion educator with over a decade in the industry. This is where I share what I've learned: skincare that makes sense, style that fits a petite frame, and the everyday rituals worth keeping.

Levi's Ribcage:
The perfect petite denim

There’s one pair of jeans I get asked about more than anything else I wear.

Not a designer piece or a new launch. A pair of Levi’s. Specifically, the Ribcage Straight Ankle, in a 23 waist and a 27-inch inseam, which I now own in three colours.

For petite women, finding jeans that fit without alterations can feel almost impossible. So when I find a pair that does, I want to explain exactly why, because once you understand what makes a jean work on a shorter frame, you can find your own perfect pair, whatever the brand.

The fit, in numbers

The Ribcage is Levi’s highest-rise jean. Based on their size 27, it has a rise of around 12 inches, a 27-inch inseam and a 17-inch leg opening. It’s slim through the hip and thigh, with a straight leg that hits at the ankle.

The fabric is a sturdy denim with only a little stretch. It holds its shape and sculpts rather than clings, which is a big part of why it looks so polished.

Why it works on a petite frame

The size range starts small. Many denim brands start at a 24 or 25 waist. The Ribcage comes in a 23, which means a proper fit at the waist without a gap at the back.

The inseam is already petite-friendly. Levi’s cuts the Ribcage as an ankle jean, so on someone of average height, it finishes above the ankle. Ironically, on me, it’s a full-length jean. I’m 152cm with a natural 27-inch inseam, so the hem lands exactly where a full-length straight leg should, with no hemming needed. What’s cropped on most people is simply the right length on a petite frame.

The high rise lengthens your legs. A higher waistband raises your visual waistline, so your legs look longer from the waist down. It’s one of the most effective proportion tricks for shorter frames. The one thing to consider is your torso: if yours is very short, a super high rise can sit close to the ribs, so it’s worth trying on.

The straight leg is balanced. Very wide legs can overwhelm a small frame, and skinny jeans can shorten the leg line. A straight leg sits in the middle, streamlined but not tight, so it works with almost everything.

Sizing

Levi’s sizes by waist measurement in inches, so measure your natural waist and start there. Because the denim has little stretch, it’s less forgiving than stretchier styles. If you’re between sizes, or have fuller hips, sizing up is usually more comfortable.

Low-stretch denim also softens and moulds slightly with wear, so a snug (but not uncomfortable) fit at first is normal.

It’s also worth knowing your natural inseam: the measurement from your crotch to the floor when you’re barefoot. It’s the single most useful number for finding jeans that fit without hemming.

The colours

  • Analyse This is a medium dark wash, and the one I’d recommend buying first. Dark wash denim is the most polished of all the washes, smart enough for the office or dinner, but still easy with a T-shirt at the weekend. It also works particularly well on a petite frame, because a darker, even wash creates a clean, uninterrupted leg line.
  • Black Sprout is a soft black with a gentle fade, rather than jet black.. It’s easy to dress up with a blazer and heels, or down with a knit and trainers.
  • Cloud Over is a clean white. White jeans are one of the easiest ways to make an outfit feel fresh, and they’re especially lovely in spring and summer.

How I style them

For petite frames, the most useful styling principle with any jean is the column of colour. Matching or toning your top, jean and shoe creates one long, unbroken line, which instantly adds height.

With Analyse This, that might be a navy knit and dark loafers. Black Sprout pairs well with a black blazer and black pointed-toe boots. And Cloud Over works with a white top and a pale shoe. With Cloud Over, a white top and a pale shoe.

A few other details make a difference:

  • Tuck or half-tuck your top, so the high rise can do its job of defining your waist.
  • Choose shoes that show a little skin at the front, like a low-cut flat, loafer or pointed-toe shoe, which extends the leg line.
  • Keep jackets cropped or at the hip, so they don’t cut your legs off at the wrong point.

Shop the edit

Once you know why a jean works on your frame, shopping for denim becomes much less of a guessing game. The Ribcage is my favourite, but the same principles apply to any pair: a high rise, the right inseam for your height, and a leg shape that balances your proportions.

The short edit

The essentials:
Levi’s Ribcage Straight Ankle has a super high rise, a straight leg and a 27-inch inseam. Levi’s cuts it as an ankle jean, but on a petite frame, it becomes full length.

Ask yourself:
Do I know my natural inseam? It’s the single most useful measurement for finding jeans that fit without hemming.

Worth knowing:
The denim has very little stretch, so if you’re between sizes, size up.
