The First Edit

July 30, 2026

Hi Beauties

Melbourne-born and London-based, I’m a beauty and fashion educator with over a decade in the industry. I created Beauty Edition to share what I’ve learned—and what I’m still figuring out. Expect skincare that makes sense, timeless style, and a slower, more intentional way of living well.

The first thing I published on this website was a perfume review.

Which is funny, because I had spent years imagining the first post would need to be more significant than that.

Something elegant and defining. A kind of opening argument. A sentence that made it immediately clear who I was, what this was, and why it was worth reading.

Instead, I wrote about Sunset Hour by Goldfield & Banks.

A fragrance I had worn through summer. Bright, peachy, warm, a little sun-drunk. The kind of scent that makes you feel like you have just walked out of the ocean and into the expensive part of a beach town, even if you are actually in London, wearing a jumper, making coffee before work.

It was not the most important thing I had to say.

It was just the first thing I could say honestly.

And maybe that is the whole point.

For years, I have had a version of this site in my head. Beauty writing, mostly. The useful kind. The kind that explains what things are, what they do, who they are for, and whether they are worth your money. Style too, eventually, once I stopped treating clothes as something I had personally failed at. London, because moving here changed the shape of my life. Travel, because I have always paid attention to what people pack, wear, buy, eat, notice, and remember.

I could see the outline.

I just kept waiting for it to become a plan.

This is an occupational hazard when you have spent years making things make sense for other people. I know how to build a training programme. I know how to take a room full of information and turn it into something structured, useful, and clear. I know how to explain a product so someone does not feel foolish for asking the question.

Apparently, I am less efficient when the thing needing structure is my own life.

So I waited.

For the better idea. The clearer categories. The perfect first essay. The version of the website that would arrive fully formed and save me from the discomfort of beginning visibly.

But no one starts with the finished thing.

You start with the thing in front of you.

In my case, that was perfume.

Which, now that I think about it, is not a bad place to begin. Fragrance is memory with better packaging. It is personal, impractical, emotional, and completely capable of making an ordinary morning feel like it belongs to a different life. It is also one of the beauty categories people feel strangely unsure about, because taste is hard to explain and harder to justify.

That is the kind of thing I like writing about.

The small decision that tells you something larger.

Why a product works. Why a jacket doesn’t. Why something you bought on holiday becomes impossible to separate from the place you found it. Why “just get it tailored” is both excellent advice and sometimes absolutely useless. Why beauty can feel intimidating until someone explains the order of things. Why clothes not fitting your body is not the same as your body being wrong.

That is the thread, I think.

Not a manifesto. An edit.

The things that have earned their place because they work, or because they meant something, or because they taught me how to look more closely.

So this is the first entry, even if it is not the grand one I imagined.

Especially because it is not the grand one I imagined.

A perfume review got me through the door.

Maybe that is enough.
